Team Manager Kathy Rodziewicz Talks About This Year's Youth Nordic Ski Teams

Wondering about the 2023/24 Youth Programs at Wausau Nordic Ski Club? We've interviewed Team Manager Kathy Rodziewicz to learn more: WNSC: Kathy, what brings you to Wausau Nordic Ski Club and the role of team manager? KR: My son, Matthew, is a skier on the MS Race Team. Our family became involved with the WNSC through Snow Striders. As Matt's interest and skills in skiing have grown, so have my interests in helping out. This year, I transitioned from volunteering with the youth to managing all K4-High School youth teams.

WNSC: What happened to the DEVO team? KR: Beginning this season, the WNSC is offering an Adventure Team in place of the Development (DEVO) Team. This team has been developed for skiers in grades 4-8 who would prefer and benefit from a recreational skiing team experience. Coached by Josh Zielinski, -practices will be twice a week and there is no out of town travel. Adventure Team skiers are still able to participate in race events if they choose to, but no racing events are required.

WNSC: What about the racing teams? Are they changing? KR: The MS Race Team and HS Race Team structure and models remain the same. The MS Race Team will be coached by Jon Oestreich and the HS Race Team will be coached by Ernie Luedke.

There has also been a change to the racing team names. Beginning this season, both the middle school and high school race teams will use the name Wausau Nordic United.

WNSC: What does the name change mean for current outfits and gear? KR: The club continues to raise funding through its capital campaign in an effort to equip all MS and HS skiers with new jackets and race gear later this season.

WNSC: How do youth and parents sign up for these programs? KR: Registration is open for any athlete(s)of all school districts in the counties of Marathon, Lincoln, and beyond. Our updated website at www.wausaunordic.org provides additional information, contacts, and registration links for all programs. Wausau Nordic Ski Club Family Membership ($70) is required for participation in club youth programs. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me or one of the coaches with your questions.

WNSC: When do youth teams start practicing?

KR: Middle School practices begin mid-October, and High School race team practices begin by early November. Registration for both programs is open through February 1, 2024. Once athletes are registered they will be able to sign up for the BAND app, our team communication tool, and practice information will be communicated in that manner.

WNSC: Sounds great - what else is coming up? KR: We'd love to have everyone join us for the following upcoming events:

  • Ski Swap: Saturday, Nov 4, time TBD @ John Muir Middle School Get your gear, buy 50/50 raffle tickets to support the youth program operational costs, and volunteer!

  • Red Robin Dinner Night: Thursday, Nov 9 @ the Rib Mt Red Robin Come support the youth programs by getting dinner at Red Robin! 20% of all sales will go to our programs! We’ll be asking our skiers to volunteer!

WNSC: How can we help? KR: If you are interested in helping the youth program directly, we are looking for individuals to fill a variety of roles. We would really appreciate your help!

  • Volunteer Coordinator: The youth program has a variety of projects in the works and would really benefit from the help of a volunteer coordinator to support our initiatives.

  • Floaters and Sweepers: The Adventure and MS Race team will need volunteers to be floaters and sweepers. Since our skiers vary in skill and development, it is helpful to have a fleet of volunteers who are able to keep an eye on the different groups to ensure safety when we ski out in the community and trails. No skiing experience is needed!

WNSC: Thank you, Kathy! We'll be doing a snow dance and looking forward to a great season! KR: Thank you! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. I look forward to seeing you on the snow!
